The Swimming Trust’s project to provide training for up to 20 young people to become swimming teachers and coaches in Hull has received a boost through a donation of £2,000 from the Hedley Foundation.

The Foundation, which was set up in 1971, made the grant because it believes that our training programme will make an impact and encourage development in the Hull area.

The Swimming Trust’s training programme, which has already been run successfully in Milton Keynes and Derby, is designed to provide young people with the key skills needed to begin making a career in swimming teaching and coaching.

It is The Swimming Trust’s ambition to roll out the Young Swimming Teacher Development Programme nationally. To do this will require more funding.

For more information on the programme please contact James Male:james.male@swimming.org or 07768 288014. To support any of our programmes please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com

The Swimming Trust is able to offer 20 young adults in Hull the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications and begin a career in sport by becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The scheme has been set up with a £5,000 donation from Clive Barford Ltd, £2,000 from the Hedley Foundation and a Community Based Grant from Hull City Council.

Working with Hull City Council, the ASA’s regional office in the North East and local voluntary organisations the project will select 20 trainees aged 16+ from the most deprived areas of north Hull and will support them through Level 1 and Level 2 UK Coaching Certificate for Teaching Aquatics or Coaching Swimming.

During the course candidates are mentored by experienced and fully qualified swimming teachers or coaches, ensuring that they receive the highest level of support required to develop their skills and experience.

Once qualified, the candidates will be fully equipped to support a qualified and licensed aquatic teacher or coach and provide much needed teaching assistance to their local swimming clubs and other groups. As this is the first step towards a career in swimming teaching and coaching, the programme offers the opportunity for individuals to develop their skills through further training.

Lisa Wright, Senior Sports Development Officer for North Hull said: “ This project will help to provide more swimming teachers to the local community and give more people the chance to learn to swim. Hull is the most deprived local authority in the Yorkshire and Humber region with some of the highest unemployment rates in the country, so we are delighted that with the help of The Swimming Trust we will be able to offer training and employment opportunities to those that have the greatest need.”

It is The Swimming Trust’s ambition to roll out the Young Swimming Teacher Development Programme nationally. To do this will require more funding.

In partnership with Kellogg’s and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) we have developed a dedicated funding programme to help schools deliver stronger learn to swim programmes at Key Stage 2 & 3.

The grants, which are funded through an investment by Kellogg’s, are aimed at increasing the number of children learning to swim in the areas that need it most.

Bruce Learner, Head of Partnerships & Corporate Responsibility for Kellogg’s Europe, said: “Kellogg’s has a long history of supporting community swimming projects with the ASA and we’re really excited that the funding will be focused solely on improving attainment and participation in school swimming.”

The programme will run until 2014.

Through our partnership with Schweppes/Abbey Well (part of Coca-Cola Great Britain) we were able to support the training of over 120 new swimming teachers and coaches as part of their commitment to get people active on the road to 2012.

When the scheme was launched in March 2009, Coca-Cola committed to make a donation to projects to get Britain swimming, and donated £50,000 to the Swimming Trust. The money was used for a Teacher Coach Education Grant Fund offering training opportunities for volunteers within Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming and Water Polo clubs across the UK.

The scheme was so successful that Coca-Cola committed a further £50,000 to run the programme for a second year.

We are proud to have been able to support the training of 248 teachers and coaches during this programme. By using their new skills we expect many thousands more people will be able to learn to swim in safe and secure environments.

Through our partnership with Kellogg’s we were able to direct more than £140,000 into community swimming across 19 projects. Here are three examples that we were very happy to support.

Example 1

Mines a Swim

This two year project targeted areas of Polkyth and Carn Brea and provided more than 3,000 swimming opportunities to those communities. The project was led and driven by the Cornwall Aquatics Action Group working with various local partners.

The project aimed to break down barriers people have to accessing swimming within deprived rural areas of Cornwall. Barriers relating to finance, transport, self confidence are addressed by this project resulting in improved community cohesion, as well as those socially and self excluded children and families access the support of the project, which in turn aids improved health and well being.

Example 2

Swim into Action

Swim into Action was a short funded project that provided the opportunity for children and young people with a visual impairment from across Yorkshire and Humber to access swimming and other swimming pool based activities.

Many children with a visual impairment find swimming difficult to access either because of the water itself or accessibility in the general environment of changing rooms etc. This project was run by Action for Blind People working in partnership with local leisure services, Actionnaires Clubs across the region and the Amateur Swimming Association to promote swimming and access to swimming to young people in a supportive and encouraging way.

Example 3

Aquanorts

Aquanorts project was focused at local delivery in a specific local community. Investment was focused at overcoming barriers such as finance, ability/disability and lack of confidence. The project provided subsidised, 12 week courses for adults living in the area and gave participants the confidence to be in water and learn to swim.

The group within Knottingley that applied for the funding worked with the local community and partner organisations to set up this programme.

The Swimming Trust is seeking funds of over £10,000 to roll out their National Young Teacher Development Programme, which aims to encourage young people into the sport and begin a career in swimming, by providing access to nationally recognised qualifications.

Following the continuing success of a pilot project in Milton Keynes, running from January 2011 to December 2012, the national charity is hoping to deliver new projects across the country in a number of targeted areas.

The Young Teacher Development Programme is aimed at individuals aged 16 to 24 years and supports them through the Level 1 and Level 2 UK Coaching Certificate for Teaching Aquatics and Coaching Swimming.

Candidates are mentored by experienced and fully qualified swimming teachers or coaches, ensuring that they receive the high level of support required to develop their skills and experience.

The programme has been designed specifically for existing swimmers who would not otherwise have access to the resources required to begin a career in teaching. It predominantly targets young people from hard-to-reach, vulnerable, BME and disadvantaged groups, and is open to both able-bodied individuals and those with a disability.

Once qualified, the candidate will be fully equipped to support a qualified and licensed aquatic teacher or coach and provide much needed teaching assistance to their local swimming clubs and other groups. As this is the first step towards a career in swimming teaching and coaching, the programme offers the opportunity for individuals to develop their skills through further training.

Kris Hunt, a participant on the Level 1 course in Milton Keynes said, “The bursary scheme was crucial in allowing me to get involved with the programme. It offered additional opportunities, for example, Disability Continual Professional Development and mentored sessions. This quickly enhanced my confidence and ability to work with groups of children. It also opened the door to job opportunities.

“My swimming career is now taking a new route, I currently work two sessions a week, plus cover work, and I will shortly be attending the Level 2 course in order to be even more actively involved. I hope this scheme is able to continue, in order to give others the same opportunity it has afforded me.”

It is the Swimming Trust’s ambition to roll out the Young Teacher Development Programme nationally. To do this, and build upon the success in Milton Keynes, they require funding.

Working with Local Authorities, the ASA’s Regional Offices and local organisations, the Swimming Trust is aiming to recruit 20 young people aged 16 to 24 for each target area, from schools, swimming clubs and community groups. To fund 10 candidates for Level 1 and 10 candidates for Level 2 the Swimming Trust requires an investment of £11,825.

Donating towards this project would mean that you are making a positive contribution towards establishing career opportunities for a new generation of young people in the sport. The Young Teacher Development Programme provides quality training, experiences and skills that last a lifetime.
